Vedanta Chairman Calls It One of the Most Difficult Phases of His Life; Cites Personal Loss and Boiler Accident, Pledges Support to Affected Families
TFP Bureau, Raipur, April 27,2026: Anil Agarwal, Chairman of Vedanta Limited, has expressed profound grief over the recent boiler accident at the Singhitrai Power Plant that claimed 25 lives, describing the past few months as one of the most painful and challenging periods of his personal and professional life.
In his second post on social media platform X on Monday, Agarwal reflected on the twin tragedies that have deeply affected him — the untimely demise of his son earlier this year and the fatal accident at the power plant on April 14.
Calling the incidents “beyond human imagination,” Agarwal said he has experienced firsthand how life can test one’s resilience. “At the beginning of the year, I lost my young son. Then, on April 14, the tragic accident at the Singhitrai Power Plant took away 25 of my precious colleagues. I understand the pain of such untimely loss all too well,” he wrote.
“A Time of Deep Personal and Collective Grief”
Agarwal described the period as one marked by sorrow, disbelief and introspection. He said both tragedies felt deeply unnatural and overwhelming, adding that no words could adequately capture the magnitude of the loss suffered by the affected families and the organisation.
He paid heartfelt tributes to the 25 employees who lost their lives in the accident, as well as to his son, Agnivesh, stating that their memories would remain forever etched in his heart and in the collective conscience of the Vedanta family.
Operations Entrusted to NGSL Joint Venture
Addressing concerns surrounding the plant’s operations, Agarwal clarified that the Athena unit at the Singhitrai facility was being run under stringent safety and security protocols. The responsibility for its operation and maintenance had been entrusted to NGSL, a joint venture between India’s ‘Maharatna’ public sector enterprise NTPC Limited and global energy technology major General Electric.
He noted that the contractors and operational teams associated with the plant were part of the joint venture’s structure and that experienced professionals were managing the facility in accordance with established industry standards and safety systems.
“It was on the strength of this trust — and with complete peace of mind — that we outsourced the maintenance and operations of this plant,” Agarwal wrote, emphasising that the decision was taken with due diligence and confidence in the expertise of the partners.
Despite adherence to safety norms and the involvement of reputed organisations, he said, the tragic accident still occurred, highlighting the unpredictable nature of industrial operations.
Safety Remains Paramount, Says Vedanta Chief
Drawing an analogy, Agarwal compared the arrangement to a vehicle owner entrusting a trusted driver with his vehicle, confident that safety norms would be followed. He stressed that safety remains the foremost priority in every contract and operation undertaken by Vedanta.
“In every Vedanta contract, safety is paramount. NTPC and GE have consistently upheld this same philosophy. Yet when a catastrophe of such magnitude strikes despite these measures, it is truly heartbreaking,” he wrote.
He reiterated Vedanta’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety, care and accountability across all its operations. The company, he said, would extend full support to the families of the deceased and ensure that necessary assistance is provided during this difficult time.
Focus on Accountability and Future Safeguards
While expressing grief, Agarwal also indicated that the organisation would continue to focus on strengthening safety frameworks and reviewing processes to prevent such incidents in the future. He underscored the importance of learning from tragedies and reinforcing institutional safeguards to protect workers and communities.
Industry observers note that large-scale industrial operations, particularly in the power and energy sectors, require constant vigilance, technological monitoring and adherence to rigorous safety audits. The Singhitrai accident has renewed attention on operational oversight and risk management practices within heavy industries.
Tribute to the Departed
Concluding his message, Agarwal offered condolences on behalf of the entire Vedanta family. “On behalf of Vedanta and myself, I offer my heartfelt tributes to all 25 cherished souls we have lost — including my own son, Agnivesh,” he wrote.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves across the industrial community, with condolences pouring in from corporate leaders and employees alike. As investigations continue into the cause of the boiler accident, the focus remains on supporting bereaved families and ensuring that such a tragedy is never repeated.
