Iranian Agency Confirms Fatal Crash; President Raisi Among the Deceased

TFP Bureau, New Delhi; May 20, 2024: In a tragic helicopter crash near the city of Jolfa, 600 km from Iran’s capital Tehran, all passengers, including Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, have died. The Iranian agency confirmed that President Raisi was returning from East Azerbaijan when the incident occurred.

The crash also claimed the lives of several other prominent leaders, including Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian. The helicopter involved was a US-made Bell 212.

Profile: Ebrahim Raisi

Ebrahim Raisi was born in 1960 in Mashhad, northeastern Iran. He served as the Prosecutor General of Tehran from 1989 to 1994 and was the Deputy Chief of the Judicial Authority for over a decade starting in 2004. In 2014, Raisi became the Prosecutor General of the Islamic Republic, and he was elected President of Iran in 2021.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that India stands with Iran in this hour of mourning. The tragic loss of President Raisi and other key leaders marks a significant moment of grief for the nation.
