TFP Bureau, Raipur, July 21, 2025: Chhattisgarh is witnessing a major expansion in its road infrastructure, with 37 national highway projects worth ₹18,215 crore currently in progress across the state. Spearheaded by Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Dev Sai, the initiative aims to strengthen connectivity in remote and backward regions while aligning with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India.
Two major economic corridors—Raipur–Visakhapatnam and Raipur–Dhanbad—are under construction to facilitate seamless industrial movement and improve logistics. In addition, an industrial corridor is being planned to spur industrial activity in the Korba-Bilaspur region.
₹5,353 Crore Cleared for Highway Upgrades
The Government of India has approved 18 projects worth ₹5,353 crore for the upgradation of national highways in the state. From 2014 to 2025, a total of ₹21,380 crore has been spent on NH development in Chhattisgarh, including the widening of 840 km of single/intermediate lane highways into double or multiple lanes.
Currently, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are being prepared for 11 new highway projects covering 1,131 km, estimated to cost ₹24,693 crore.
Focus on State Roads and Urban Connectivity
Beyond national highways, 70 state road projects worth ₹3,826 crore have been approved under Central Road and CRIF schemes, including projects of economic and interstate importance. A 92 km, six-lane Raipur–Durg bypass, being constructed in two phases at a cost of ₹2,289 crore, will ease urban congestion and improve traffic flow in key cities like Raipur, Durg, Bilaspur, Bastar, and Surguja.
Game-Changing Economic Corridors
- Raipur–Visakhapatnam Corridor: A 124-km, six-lane road with an approved budget of ₹4,146 crore is under construction. The corridor will enhance export connectivity via Visakhapatnam port and generate new employment opportunities.
- Raipur–Dhanbad Connectivity: A four-lane, 157-km Bilaspur–Urga–Pathalgaon road is being built at a cost of ₹4,007 crore to connect Chhattisgarh’s cities with Ranchi and Dhanbad in Jharkhand.
Development in LWE and Tribal Regions
To curb Naxalism, ₹2,625 crore has been spent under the Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) scheme on critical road development from 2014 to 2025. Additionally, under the PM-Janman Yojana for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), 715 roads covering 2,449 km and worth ₹1,699 crore have been approved. These will benefit 775 tribal settlements in the state, accounting for 51% of the national PM-Janman road allocation.
Industrial and Feeder Corridor Projects
To boost industrial growth, the government has approved the construction of the Korba–Bilaspur Industrial Corridor, along with several feeder routes including:
- Urga–Katghora bypass
- Basna–Sarangarh (Manikpur) feeder route
- Sarangarh–Raigarh feeder route
- Raipur–Lakhanadon Economic Corridor
These projects span 236.1 km and have received a combined sanction of ₹9,208 crore. An additional ₹908 crore has been approved for road construction under the Central Road Fund.
With these massive infrastructure investments, Chhattisgarh is on a fast track to becoming a key logistics and industrial hub in eastern India.
