WWF-India’s ‘Green Diwali’ Campaign Inspires Citizens to Celebrate a Swachh, Shubh and Sustainable Festival

TFP Bureau, New Delhi, October 20 — In an effort to inspire citizens to adopt sustainable practices during the festive season, WWF-India’s Programme Centre–Resource Partner (PC-RP), supported by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has launched the ‘Green Diwali’ campaign under the government’s Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). The campaign promotes a conscious celebration of a Swachh (clean), Shubh (auspicious), and Green Diwali by encouraging environmentally responsible choices among citizens.

Building upon the success of its previous flagship initiative, Breath of Change – Clean Air, Blue Skies, which engaged over two lakh citizens across Delhi through 25 awareness programmes, WWF EIACP (Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme) continues its mission to integrate environmental consciousness into traditional celebrations. The earlier campaign created a strong foundation for environmental awareness, urging communities to recognise their role in improving air quality and protecting urban ecosystems.

As part of this year’s Green Diwali initiative, WWF EIACP inaugurated a symbolic ‘Breathable Art’ installation in Rohini, Delhi. The art piece represents collective community action for clean air and reflects the shared responsibility of citizens in building a pollution-free future. The installation serves as a reminder that even small, local initiatives can contribute to achieving larger environmental goals.

In line with the spirit of Mission LiFE, WWF EIACP has urged people to adopt simple yet impactful eco-friendly habits during Diwali. Citizens are encouraged to replace plastic decorations with biodegradable or upcycled alternatives, create rangolis using natural ingredients such as rice flour, flower petals, and turmeric, and opt for energy-efficient lighting solutions like LEDs, solar lanterns, or traditional diyas. The organisation also advocates for supporting local artisans and small businesses by purchasing handmade gifts and eco-friendly products, thereby reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable livelihoods.

The campaign also emphasises the importance of minimising festive waste and completely avoiding single-use plastics, which are among the biggest contributors to post-celebration pollution. By taking these conscious steps, individuals can protect both the environment and public health while preserving the traditional joy and warmth associated with Diwali.

WWF-India’s Green Diwali campaign aligns closely with India’s global commitments to combat climate change and promote sustainable living, particularly through the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals — SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Through this initiative, WWF EIACP aims to transform festive celebrations into opportunities for environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

Encouraging every citizen to take part, WWF EIACP has called upon people across the country to pledge for a “clean, green, and plastic-free Diwali.” The organisation emphasises that the true spirit of the festival lies not only in lighting our homes but also in illuminating the path towards a healthier planet.

With its growing community of eco-conscious citizens and the continued support of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, WWF-India’s Green Diwali initiative seeks to redefine celebration through sustainability — turning each diya lit into a symbol of hope for a cleaner, greener future.
