Nation Mourns as Senior Leader, Five Others Killed in Learjet Crash; Leaders Across India Express Deep Grief

In a tragic aviation accident that has plunged Maharashtra and the nation into deep mourning, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar lost his life in a plane crash at Baramati airport early Wednesday morning. The Learjet 45 aircraft (VT-SSK), operated by VSR, crash-landed under circumstances that are still being investigated. All five persons on board, including the Deputy Chief Minister, are feared dead.
According to initial information, the aircraft was carrying Ajit Pawar along with two staff members—his Personal Security Officer and an attendant—and two crew members, including the Pilot-in-Command and First Officer. Rescue teams rushed to the site immediately after the crash, but authorities later confirmed that there were no survivors.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis expressed profound grief over the loss, calling it one of the darkest days for the state. In an emotional statement, he said the sudden demise of Ajit Pawar was unbelievable and deeply shocking, especially at a time when the senior leader was playing a key role in Maharashtra’s development. Describing Pawar as a strong, generous friend and an experienced leader, Fadnavis said the loss was not only personal but also an irreparable blow to the state and to public life.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the death of Ajit Pawar, describing him as a leader deeply connected to the grassroots and widely respected for his tireless service to the people of Maharashtra. In his message, the Prime Minister highlighted Pawar’s administrative acumen, commitment to empowering the poor and downtrodden, and his reputation as a hardworking public servant. Calling the demise extremely shocking and saddening, the Prime Minister extended condolences to the bereaved family and countless admirers.
Condolences poured in from across the country, cutting across party lines. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, describing it as extremely distressing and heartbreaking. He said Ajit Pawar dedicated his life to farmers’ welfare, public service, and national development, and that his untimely death was a major loss to Maharashtra’s political landscape. The Chief Minister prayed for peace to the departed souls and strength for the grieving families.
