BALCO Organizes Mega Blood Donation Drive to Support Local Blood Bank

Over 250 Units of Blood Collected in a Single Day

TFP Bureau, Korba; June 27, 2024: Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), a part of Vedanta Aluminium and one of India’s leading aluminium producers, successfully organized a mega blood donation camp at the BALCO Hospital. In collaboration with the District Medical and Health Department of Korba, the event saw enthusiastic participation from BALCO employees, their families, and local community members, resulting in the collection of over 250 units of blood.

Held to commemorate World Blood Donor Day, the day-long camp aimed not only to bolster local blood supplies but also to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation. The collected units will be stored at the blood banks of the Government Medical College in Korba, providing critical support for patients with conditions such as Thalassemia, sickle cell disease, cancer, trauma injuries, and more. The blood will be available free of charge to those in need.

BALCO’s CEO and Director, Mr. Rajesh Kumar, expressed his appreciation for the overwhelming response.

“We prioritize community health through various initiatives. The community’s collective response during this blood donation drive is heartening and will significantly enhance local blood bank reserves. This effort strengthens the region’s medical infrastructure, meeting emergency requirements and saving lives.”

Chief Health and Medical Officer of Korba, Mr. S. N. Kesari, lauded BALCO’s efforts, saying,

“Facilitating blood donations from over 250 people is a remarkable achievement. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each donor for their selfless act. This generosity will save countless lives in our community and have a profound impact on many families.”

BALCO’s dedication to community well-being is evident through its numerous healthcare initiatives. In FY24, these efforts impacted approximately 1.35 lakh lives:

Project Arogya: Ensures access to primary healthcare services via Rural Health Posts (RHPs) and awareness campaigns on HIV, maternal and child health, and malnutrition, reaching around 50,000 people last year.
Mobile Health Vans (MHVs): Fully equipped health units that visit communities bi-monthly, addressing primary healthcare needs for over 15,500 people in FY24 alone.
Quarterly Mega Health Camps: Promote vaccinations, hygiene practices, and overall healthcare awareness.
Project Nayi Kiran: Sensitized over 57,000 people on menstrual hygiene through educational activities across 45 villages in Korba.
Balco Medical Centre: A 170-bed oncology facility catering to over 38,500 people since its inception in 2018.

BALCO Hospital, a 100-bed facility, serves employees, their families, and residents from several Chhattisgarh districts:

– Staffed by a team of specialists and supported by 14 Resident Medical Officers, 60 nurses, and 113 staff members.
– Participates in the Ayushman Bharat scheme, organizing regular screenings, awareness camps, and supporting government vaccination programs.
– Serves over 2,10,000 patients annually across Korba, Raigarh, Bilaspur, and Janjgir Champa districts.

The mega blood donation camp not only achieved a significant collection of lifesaving blood units but also recognized the contributions of volunteers, who were honored with ‘Blood Donor’ certificates, reinforcing BALCO’s commitment to enhancing community health and well-being.
